A Date with the Hand of God Read online

crazy!”

“Come on, I’m going to be late”

I found myself walking with her again. I was sure I was going to punch her father when I got there. I was angry, I couldn’t stand it. After all, she was acting like it was all fine. It wasn’t!

“Don’t misunderstand, I asked for it” she looked at me

  “Why?”

“Like I said, it was punishment. I didn’t say, but I have to write with this hand for it to come true. Yesterday I wrote something I shouldn’t have, ah, but I told my dad straight away. I agreed to be punished because I had to go to school no matter what”

“…I don’t know if you’re telling the truth or lying to me”

  “I can show you”

We stopped for the moment under a streetlamp. I got her a pen and a piece of paper. She bent down to the floor as she undid her bandages. It was horrible looking. She gripped the pen with her purple fingers and wrote out in terrible writing. She passed it to me with tears in her eyes. It must have been painful… yet this girl wrote it.

I read what she had written: On their way home, a black cat passed the couple. He didn’t believe the girl made this happen when a fish fell from the sky in front of him. It was his favourite- salmon.

I helped her up and wiped her tears away. I walked her further up the road when that black cat passed us. I didn’t believe it, she knew the area, maybe even saw it ahead. That was when a fish fell before me… it was a live salmon.

“See?” she said as she walked ahead

“Oi!” I ran to catch up, “You’re telling the truth? Everything?”

“Of course, why would I lie to you?”

I felt awkward for a moment and then walked side by side with her. It was like I was her boyfriend. We got to her house as we stood in front of her door.

“Well, do you still not want your kiss?” she asked

I stared away in thought for a moment when she kissed me herself. I was gobsmacked but I liked it. I wondered about coming in, especially so late, but she said this far was fine.

I smiled but it still bothered me. Her curse, and what she wrote yesterday… and so I asked.

“Oh,” she smiled, “About that, promise me you won’t hate me?”

  “Of course” I said

  “I wrote about getting a boyfriend…”

  “…About me?”

“Yes… I wrote about a perfect date with a perfect boyfriend that would meet me at the school gates, I didn’t like anyone particularly, so I had to make someone up”

“…Then? Did you make me up?”

“Probably, I’ve never seen you before, even though everyone else seems to know you”

“…I don’t know what to say, then my mother? And father too? My little brother? All of my memories and everything, you made it all up?”

“I’m not sure how it works but it’s likely”

  “…I see”

  “You’re not mad are you?”

  “Ah…” I didn’t know what to say

“Anyway,” she yawned loudly, “I look forward to seeing you everyday now. Ah, look at the time, I’ve got to go, bye”

I stood there as she waved goodbye to me with that bandaged hand. Being a perfect boyfriend from the start I didn’t give it anymore thought and kissed her goodnight. As I walked home I thought about how my life was strangely happy now. Even if it was all brought into existence yesterday just for her.

  About the author

  “If I had that hand, I’d probably get a pet… a dragon :)

Btw the cover was done by my brother, I was going to going with cartoony since that’s how I draw, what do you think?”

For those who are tragically obsessed, Nobo13 was born 1987 in Cambridgeshire. He spent four years doing a Physics degree but spend most of the time doodling and writing. Currently he is training to be a Science Teacher.

Nobo13’s pen name is derived from using his surname, just look above! His more unusual hobbies are collecting headphones, staring aimlessly out the window (which consumes much of his time) and messing about with musical instruments- at the moment these are ocarinas and ukuleles.
